We have been so grateful to our supporters through this difficult time coming up with unique ways to fundraise for us. Longtime supporter Liz sold face masks on Etsy raising over £500 for Eyes For East Africa! You can still buy the masks - click here. Michelle has made some beautiful hand made spectacle chains, which are for sale in our online shop for just £10 - click here to have a look. If you would like to donate or fundraise for us, click on the 'support us' tab above for more information.
Staying Safe
During the pandemic, the excellent staff at the Eye Centre continue to provide essential and urgent Eye Care. They are employing extra hygeine measures, social distancing, and the use of PPE to keep everyone as safe as possible.
The photos show the Eye Centre staff undergoing COVID-19 training, carried out by Kenyas Ministry of Health.
Eye Go Fishing 2020
Eye Go Fishing is an annual fundraising event which takes place on the Kenyan coast, near the Eye Centre, each year. Despite COVID-19 it went ahead safely this year. 15 boats put to sea early Sunday morning, with the target to catch a yellowfin tuna. The winner of the tournament was a Lady Mariya, fished up from Diani by the Glaser family. “It was our first competition with our new boat!” reported a delighted Richard who, with his two sons, John and Liam, decided to focus on the target fish. This was great sport as they managed to land two fish, but one monster got away, almost taking one of the fishermen overboard as he did so!
All good sport and the battle, of course, is to prevent needless blindness in our country. Over £2750 was raised for the work at Kwale Eye Centre. “Cataract is still the commonest cause of needless blindness in our country “ says Dr Helen, the Medical Director, “and of course the people who are blind from this can rarely afford to pay even the subsidised costs which we ask. It’s difficult to imagine” continues Dr Helen “how it must feel to suddenly have your sight restored after many years of needless blindness.”
Thank you so much to all those who took part and raised money for this important cause!
