our team in Kenya
Dr Helen Roberts MBE is a UK qualified ophthalmologist. She founded the Eye Centre in 1993 and is its Medical Director. Dr Roberts was awarded fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists UK in 1991. She was awarded an MBE in the July 2001 Honours list in recognition of her pioneering work saving sight in Kenya.
Amos is the programme manager at the Eye Centre.
Vera is our human resource manager and administrator. It is her hard work which keeps the Eye Centre running smoothly!
Lilian is our cataract surgeon. She supports Dr. Helen in both clinical and surgical work. Lilian is involved in most of the Eye Centres surgical camps, and really enjoys her work.
Charity is our cataract surgeon and clinical Officer
Dr Shabbir is our young ophthalmologist and surgeon
Paul is our clinical officer and cataract surgeon
Ann is our head nurse
Brendah is the Optical manager at the Eye Centre
Justeen is in charge of our community based program and is very strong in counselling
Almasi is our low vision therapist, and helps visually impaired people best utilise what little vision they may have.
Oscar Keya was in charge of maintenance at the Eye Centre for some time. In May 2012 he was trained in optical dispensing and setting up the optical workshop at the centre. He now works on the manufacture of spectacles in the new workshop.

Tom Parkinson is a trustee and current chairman of Eyes For East Africa. Tom is a solicitor, he is also a keen fundraiser on behalf of the Eye Centre.
Jonathan Arkle is a trustee and current Treasurer for Eyes For East Africa. Jonno grew up in Diani, where the Eye Centre is, and is a personal friend of Dr. Helen. As such, he is thrilled to be part of such a fantastic cause.
George Walton is a trustee for Eyes For East Africa.
Dr Roger Humphry MD FRCS FRCOphth, is a trustee and honorary ophthalmic surgeon at the Eye Centre. He visits the Eye Centre regularly. In his spare time, he plays the saxophone in the Salisbury Big Band, which regularly raises funds for the Eye Centre.
Kate Terriere, recently Head of Strategy at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, brings experience in strategy & programmes, fundraising, and sustainable development. She knows the Eye Centre well and is delighted to be a Trustee
Jim Crow has been a supporter of the Eye Centre for many years and served as Chairman of the charity for many years. Jim lives in Fleet Hampshire, England. He works on fundraising activities and makes regular visits to the Eye Centre in Kenya, visiting at his own expense.
Gillian Caplan is a dispenser and Creative Director. See well and give sight is the ethos of Gillian’s online business. 10% of online sales are set aside specifically for children who can’t afford eyewear who need them. She volunteers on her trips to the centre and enjoys jumping in and dispensing alongside the team.
Jane Tapley is an orthoptist who has visited the Eye Centre numerous times to train staff. The Low Vision department in particular has really benefited from Jane sharing her skills and expertise.
Dr. Stefan Vogel is an ophthalmologist from Germany who visits the Eye Centre every year at his own expense. He gets involved with everything from theatre systems to fieldwork strategy. He is invaluable as he knows the Eye Centre so well and has a logical approach.
Sarah Lucie is a consultant ophthalmologist and medical retinal specialist from reading. She has visited for 6 years for a week in feb at her own expense.
Imran is an ophthalmologist who visits the eye centre regulary to share his skills and expertise.
Bruce James is a UK ophthalmologist who visits the Eye Centre regularly to train.
Anne Jervell is an optometrist from Norway. She has visited the Eye Centre numerous times to train our staff.
