Training

Kwale Eye Centre recently provided training at the main government hospital. We worked with maternal child health nurses and midwives, as they are the people who interface with young children. We taught them to do a basic eye exam on small children and refer if they need to be seen by us. This has been so successful that we are rolling out the programme to every government hospital in the county!

Optical

Uncorrected Refractive Error ( ie the need for spectacles to see clearly ) is increasingly being recognised as a cause of visual disability, even blindness. Many people need glasses to see to do even basic every day tasks, but a lot of people don't have easy access to an optician. Here we see Fred, our optometrist, measuring a patient's need for spectacles using the newly equipped refractive area. Below are some stories of other people who have been helped by our optical department.

Albert suffers from an allergy which makes his eyes very sensitive to light . He struggles to play football with his friends and he can't concentrate at school because his eyes itch and irritate and stream. A simple pair of donated sunglasses make life much more comfortable

Tim has just learnt how to ride a motorbike and looks forward to ferrying passengers on his uncle's bike.. But the glare and dust compound with a slight refractive error to make it very difficult to judge the speed of that oncoming vehicle. A pair of spectacles to crisp up his vision and cut out the glare make everybodys’ lives safer

Marian's world was blurred and her eyes didn't work well together. She has a squint which is partially corrected by spectacles. She will need ongoing assessment and eventually surgery to straighten the eyes

Thank you to our supporters!

With safety precautions in place, Kwale Eye Centre is as busy as ever providing eye care to the community. Thanks to a very generous donor, the patients in the photos below recently had treatment. They all underwent surgery either for cataract or, in the case of two of the children, injury and glaucoma. They are all doing well and follow up continues so that they gain the best possible outcome. Thank you to our donor for their support, which has literally changed lives!

Regular giving

During these unusual times many of our fundraising efforts are on pause. This means we are relying more on our regular donors to continue to provide sight saving treatment. It is simple, safe and secure to set up a regular direct debit through the Charities Aid Foundation. Click on the link below to donate!
