Uncorrected Refractive Error ( ie the need for spectacles to see clearly ) is increasingly being recognised as a cause of visual disability, even blindness. Many people need glasses to see to do even basic every day tasks, but a lot of people don't have easy access to an optician. Here we see Fred, our optometrist, measuring a patient's need for spectacles using the newly equipped refractive area. Below are some stories of other people who have been helped by our optical department.

Albert suffers from an allergy which makes his eyes very sensitive to light . He struggles to play football with his friends and he can't concentrate at school because his eyes itch and irritate and stream. A simple pair of donated sunglasses make life much more comfortable
Tim has just learnt how to ride a motorbike and looks forward to ferrying passengers on his uncle's bike.. But the glare and dust compound with a slight refractive error to make it very difficult to judge the speed of that oncoming vehicle. A pair of spectacles to crisp up his vision and cut out the glare make everybodys’ lives safer
Marian's world was blurred and her eyes didn't work well together. She has a squint which is partially corrected by spectacles. She will need ongoing assessment and eventually surgery to straighten the eyes
