Happy new year!

We'd like to wish all of our supporters a very happy new year. As we mentioned in our last webnews, In 2021, Kwale Eye Centre treated over 33,000 patients and operated on almost 1,200 cataracts this year and we would like to say THANK YOU so much for your support, without which this simply would not have been possible! We hope 2022 will be just as successful!

Patient stories

We love bringing you uplifting stories about patients at the Eye Centre, it shows how much difference your support really makes! ​

Our first story is about John. John’s mother could not understand why her two month old son did not smile back at her when she held him in her arms - increasingly it became clear that he couldn’t see. It was impossible for John to go to school so he stayed at home with his younger sister. Kwale Eye Centre held an eye camp not far from his village and John’s mother carried her son most of the way to see the eye doctor. Here is John three months after surgery to remove his cataracts proudly wearing his school uniform as we test his eyesight. "Next time you test me I will know my letters," he said.

Our second story is about Nelly. Little Nelly was helping her grandmother chop firewood when a piece flew into her right eye. The amazing surgeons at Kwale Eye Centre operated on Sunday morning to try to save the eye, and 2 days later she left the hospital with her mum - she'll receive follow up care to ensure the best outcome. Accidents can happen so easily, and accessible eye care is so important for people like Nelly who need treatment immediately to save their sight.
