Kwale District Eye Centre - Kenya
For those people able to afford treatment the costs are as follows. However, a poor people's fund is available to help offset the charges for those in dire need. This fund exists thanks to the generosity of KDEC's supporters. The following provides an indication of typical costs incurred by KDEC:
* In the case of children, the cost of restoring sight is higher at $USD285, because the operation has to be carried out under a general anaesthetic and children require more follow-up action. Follow-up of a blind child in school and home - $USD 100 per year/ per child. Cost of educating a village community to prevent blindness from causes such as measles and Vitamin A deficiency - $USD 500 per year.
